Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) is accepting applications for its biennial Juried Youth Art Exhibit and Native Artist Market, which will be held during Celebration 2020, scheduled June 10-13.
The art exhibit is open to students in grades 6-12, who will compete in middle and high school divisions. Art accepted for the show will be on display from June 5-27. There is no application fee. The application deadline is March 27.
SHI first held the program in 2016, and many of the pieces submitted to the exhibit have been highly detailed and sophisticated, said SHI President Rosita Worl.
“We have been so inspired by the work of our young Northwest Coast artists across the region,” Worl said. “The work of these artists and the teachers who are guiding them will ensure that Northwest Coast art survives into the future and continues to reach the highest standards set by our ancestors.”
The Native Artist Market is scheduled June 10-13. The application deadline is May 15. The goals of the market, in part, are to support the perpetuation of Native art traditions of Southeast Alaska with the quality and aesthetic forms that gave rise to its distinction and to promote the production of those Native art forms which are endangered.
Sealaska Heritage Institute is a private nonprofit founded in 1980 to perpetuate and enhance Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska. Its goal is to promote cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding through public services and events. SHI also conducts social scientific and public policy research that promotes Alaska Native arts, cultures, history and education statewide. The institute is governed by a Board of Trustees and guided by a Council of Traditional Scholars, a Native Artist Committee and a Southeast Regional Language Committee.
